VISCERALIS MANIPULATION: Abdomen 1
Level 1 of the Visceral Manipulation Education Program of The Barral Institute
Visceral Manipulation (VM) was developed by world-renowned French Osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral. Visceral Manipulation: Developed by him, Abdomen 1 (VM1) is the base of the education program providing a thorough insight into the basic principles, theories and techniques of the method. Each higher level of the education program deals with parts of the body in more and more details, enriching the participants’ knowledge by more and more sophisticated techniques. All levels of the program contain several practical and very effective techniques which can be immediately applied in the participant’s professional practice.
VM1 puts great emphasis on the development of sensible tactile skills, as palpation is of vital importance in Visceral Manipulation therapy. In order to master the palpation skills, participants need time and practice. Therefore, different skill levels can be learnt in each course, according to the participants’ advancement. VM1 focuses on the ability that helps distinguish the different types and layers of visceral tissues. Participants gradually learn to reach the deep tissues in a non-invasive way, and also to understand what they feel.

FURTHER COURSE HIGHLIGHTS
Techniques to identify the anatomical components and connective tissues belonging to them.
1. Differentiating several tissue qualities such as: tone, elasticity, expansiveness, fibrosis (if present);
2. Motion, mobility and motility;
3. The reaction to inducement, and the functional connection with other tissues of the body.
In order to learn these techniques, participants receive detailed anatomical and functional-mechanical information referring to each organ.
Learning Visceral Manipulation starts with the abdomen, as this is the biggest among the visceral cavities and the easiest to access. To abdominal organs belong: liver, stomach, gallbladder, bile duct, duodenum, small intestine, large intestine and the tissues connecting them. Higher levels of the education program deal with the posterior abdominal organs, the pelvic organs, the thoracic organs, and the cranial viscera.
The course presents the methods of examination: ‘general listening’, ‘local listening’ (general and local examination), motility, examination of mobility and inhibition techniques. With the help of these methods the parts of the body with the greatest tension can be located. The above-mentioned techniques are global, including all systems and tissues of the body. Techniques are presented to determine the exact areas of pathological function. The casual links between visceral blocks and somatic function disorders can be observed.
COURSE HIGHLIGHTS
Day 1:
Introduction, Concept and Theory
- History and basics of the visceral concept, its significance in manual therapy.
- General anatomy and physiology of the thoracic and abdominal organs. Their connection with the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, vascular system, respiratory system and the digestive system.
- General principles of the fascia, the mechanical connecting system of the organs.
- Principles of visceral techniques - organ-specific fascia mobilization.
- Discussing and explaining contraindications.
- Latest researches on the relation of the internal pressure of the body, the visceral motion and the restrictions of the soft tissues.
- Liver: Presentation: The liver, and its connection to the diaphragm and to other viscera; anatomical reference points; sliding surfaces, normal liver mobility referring to the three anatomical planes; hepatic fixation; present theories of mobility and motility; hepatic fixation or present techniques of the correction of mobility disorders.

- Examination Skills (‘Listening’): 1. ‘General Listening’ (General Examination), 2. ‘Local Listening’ (Local Examination), 3. ‘Inhibition’
- Stomach: its manual examination and treatment; treating the lowering of the stomach, manual examination and treatment of stomach ulcer

- Mesenteric root and small intestine; test, examination and treatment of mobility
- Gallbladder: Exact anatomical description of the gallbladder and its duct system, including the common bile duct, and the Sphincter of Oddi; Third level of gallbladder manipulation (1. Body/fundus and neck of the gallbladder, 2. Cystic duct, 3. Stretching of the common bile duct);

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION
Anyone can apply for VM1 course. Preliminary preparation is the participant’s own responsibility. Lacking this preparation may result in difficulties of understanding. Therefore, we suggest that participants should check up on the anatomical expressions and components listed in the enclosed material. We would like the course to be an interesting and valuable learning experience for everyone.
- Agreement to comply with our general principles and rules of procedures (Code of Ethics) (please find them enclosed in the e-mail we will send);
- Approval of the Head of the Course Organizer that is Upledger Institute Hungary Ltd..
- Submission of the application documents (1 copy of the Application Form filled in completely, 2 copies of the Course Contract signed on each page, 1 piece of a photo not older than 6 months) within the given deadline;
- Complete payment of the Participation Fee within the given deadline.
- Taking part actively at least in one Visceral Manipulation Therapy session as a patient by a certified therapist (with CST exam), at least at SER1 level is mandatory for participants who have not taken part in the CranioSacral Therapist education program of Upledger Institute Hungary yet. Names and contacts of the therapists who meet the requirements can be found with the help of the search engine under the 'Students' section of the website by checking the 'Therapists for Demo Treatment' check box. After the treatment please send an e-mail stating the location and date of the treatment, as well as, the therapist's name. This latter condition is inevitable for more reasons. On one hand, students can experience themselves the impact of the therapy they are about to learn. On the other, the experience gained from the professional therapist makes it possible for the students to give feedback on the quality of palpation during the practical sessions of the training, when practicing with each other.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Preliminary Preparation Organizer provides participants with the opportunity to take part in a one-day long anatomy preparation workshop. Location is subject to change depending on the number of applicants. Workshop Fee: 20.000 HUF/Person
Attire: Wearing loose, comfortable layered clothing and indoor slippers during the course is recommended. Avoid wearing tight clothes. As several techniques require the touch of the bare belly, it is inevitable to wear such clothing which allows the skin to be accessed easily. Due to the nature of the method, nails have to be cut short.
Certification: At the end of the training students will receive a certification issued by The Barral Institute. The issue of the certification is subject to the students’ presence during the whole period of the course, as well as, to their active participation and cooperation. The issued certificate does not qualify for individual medical activity!
The course belongs to accredited adult education, 17 credit points are given to medical professionals.
Mere participation in the course does not entitle the participant to use the studied techniques in professional practice, because according to the Edict No. 40/1997. (III.5.), as well as, to the NM Decree No. 11/1997 (V..28.), it is subject to authorization. The participant is obliged to meet the legal requirements in order to carry out professional practice.
