NEURAL MANIPULATION
AN INTEGRATIVE APPROACH TO TRAUMA (NM1)
DATE OF UPCOMING NM1 WORKSHOP
to be determined
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Neural Manipulation examines mechanical relationships between the cranium/spine hard frame to the dura and neural elements. It provides assessment and treatment approaches to address restrictions of the dural and neural components not commonly focused on with musculoskeletal symptoms. Neural Manipulation identifies and releases local nerve restrictions while at the same time examines the effect these local fixations have on the rest of the body, and by accessing this relationship, resolves the more comprehensive (global) dysfunctional patterns.
A nerve only functions correctly when it is able to move feely within its surrounding structures. The modality of Neural Manipulation facilitates nerve conductivity and intraneural blood supply for local and systemic responsiveness. By understanding the detailed anatomy of the neural manipulation, one can clearly see the potential for pathological change when nerves are restricted.
Manual therapy, as it applies to the treatment of nerves, follows the standard principles of mobility and function. For optimal function nerves must be able to move freely within its surroundings. This freedom of movement is essential for:
- nerve conduction
- electromagnetic conduction
- intraneural blood supply
- intraneural nerve supply
- local and systemic responsiveness
COURSE HIGHLIGHTS
NM1 is a specialized course focusing on the impact of trauma and whiplash.
- Study the three primary areas of trauma as they relate to whiplash: physical laws, evaluation and treatment.
- Learn the appropriate anatomy and physiology for treatment of whiplash and trauma conditions.
- Learn to locate and release restrictions along the meningeal system.
- Assess injuries to the soft tissues of the cervical region and learn treatment protocols for optimal release.
- Learn tests to determine restriction patterns of the cervicobrachial region.
- Understand how whiplash creates restriction patterns throughout the body.
- Identify techniques that encompass the whole body, as the whole body receives collision forces in a whiplash injury, not just the cervical spine.
- Learn to evaluate restrictions in the lumbosacral region.
- Discover new applications of visceral manipulation principles and techniques as they can be utilized for patients presenting whiplash and other conditions involving trauma.
- Compare treatment sequence and tests for whiplash and traumatic injuries.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
We leave it up to each prospective student to assume responsibility for advance preparation; we cannot screen students for their level of readiness. You may, however, find yourself frustrated and left behind if you do not study before hand. It is suggested that you read through the Visceral Manipulation II text book and look up the terms for the following lists of terms and structures provided. It is also recommended that you begin your study well in advance of the scheduled workshops to allow for unforeseen interruptions and a comfortable learning pace. We want this to be an interesting and intriguing educational experience for all of you.
Attire
Wearing loose, comfortable, layered clothing and indoor slippers during the course is recommended. Avoid wearing tight clothes. As several techniques require the touch of the bare skin, it is inevitable to wear such clothing which allows the skin to be accessed easily. Due to the nature of the method, nails have to be cut short.
Certification
At the end of the training students will receive a certification issued by The Barral Institute. The issue of the certification is subject to the students’ presence during the whole period of the course, as well as, to their active participation and cooperation. The issued certificate does not qualify for individual medical activity!
TESTIMONIALS
"Since I got back to my practice, I have used the NM in two of my clients. One of which I saw today. He has been having low back pain for several months and mentioned today that it felt somewhat "electrical". I talked to him about using NM for it and he agreed, after doing some testing and performing a nerve release in the sciatic nerve on the right, he reported around 5 hours later that his back pain was almost gone and he hasn't felt this good in weeks. He also told me not to forget what I did! So this is great stuff and I just wanted to thank you again for a great class that translated into immediate results for a chronic pain client."
D. Sidmore, LMT, NCTMB
"I used some of the techniques on a TMJ patient of mine and she reported having some pretty remarkable responses to it. So much so that her maxillofascial specialist called me to talk a bit about the technique. Thanks!"
D. Arnold, PT, DPT, CSCS
"To date I have completed two listening courses, NM1 and 2, and VM courses 1-4, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. The style of teaching on these courses allows you to conceptualise anatomy in 3D form and really develop your palpatory skills. These are intensive courses, a lot of material is covered, but it's done at a steady pace, with the instructor and teaching assistants on hand to deal with any queries. The time flies!! I always come away from the Barral courses feeling enthusiastic and re-motivated, especially when I can apply the techniques to conditions that previously hadn't responded to treatment, and I can testify they do work. I recommend these courses for any manual practitioner who wants to treat the body holistically, but also wants to be specific and achieve results."
